Samuel Cholvin, a well known resident of the city of Madison, Dane County, WI, was born in Mifflin, Iowa County, IA, 01 Jul 1850, [p 434] a son of Francis and Martha (Wilson) Cholvin. Francis Cholvin was born in France, near Paris, in 1812, and Martha (Wilson) Cholvin in Mount Vernon [Knox or Stark County?], OH, in 1820. The father was a smelter of lead ore by trade, and came to WI in 1834, locating at Galena [Jo Daviess County, IL], later removing to Potosi [Grant County], WI, but in 1840 settling down in Iowa County [WI]. He died in Dubuque [Dubuque County], IA, in 1890, but the mother is still living. Our subject has two brothers and two sisters: Josephine, married Louis Boyvin; Mary, married Jerome S. Richie; Alfred, is a farmer at Dubuque, IA; and John, is a merchant at Denver, CO.
Samuel Cholvin was given a public school education at Dubuque, IA, subsequently taking a course at Bailey's Commercial College in the same city. After he had closed his school books he went into agricultural life, locating at Wellington, Monroe County, [WI], and remained there until he came
to Madison, WI, in 1889. During this time he was engaged in general farming and stock raising, and since his removal to Madison has carried on his farming through tenants. For some time he has been conducting a general store at Harts, WI, and a saw mill, but has discontinued his interest in the latter. He has fine improvements upon his farms, and is especially pleased with his success in the raising of fine cattle.
In 1889 Samuel Cholvin came to Madison, Dane County, WI, where he has a fine residence; he was married 16 Dec 1875 to Miss Sidonia Waller, the daughter of Simon Waller, a broker of Dubuque [Dubuque County], IA, who died when Mrs. Cholvin was but 16 months old. She was reared in the city of Dubuque, and attended the public schools. Two children have been born to Samuel and
Sidonia (Waller) Cholvin: Mamie A., born 30 Dec 1876; and Julia J., 29 Apr 1884. One little one died in infancy, but Mamie and Julia attend school at Madison, bright and intelligent children. Samuel Cholvin is a Republican in politics, and has held the office of chairman of the County Committee, and is one of the most respected citizens.
