Retired Air Force pilot and Anchorage resident Arthur Leroy Spooner, 64, died Sept. 24 of cancer at Providence Hospital. A service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Scenic Park Bible Church with the Rev. Jack Bacher and the Rev. John Spooner officiating. A visitation will be held from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at Evergreen Memorial Chapel, Downtown. Pallbearers will be his sons, John, James, David and Daniel, and his brothers, Robert and William. Mr. Spooner was born Dec. 10, 1926, in Lampson, Wis. He graduated from high school in Webster, Wis., and immediately enlisted in the Army. He attended Ripon College in Wisconsin, and Penn State College. In 1953, he graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in West Point, N.Y., and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Air Force. He completed his flying training in 1954. He met his wife, Coralea, at Milwaukee Bible Institute in August 1954 and they were married in Denver the following October. They were stationed at Johnson Air Force Base. He then attended the University of California for graduate studies in physics. He went to Dyess Air Force Base in Texas in 1958. He flew a B-47 to and from Europe until 1965. From McChord Air Force Base in Tacoma, Wash., he flew a C- 124 to Alaska, the Far East and Europe until called to duty in Vietnam. He flew a C-47 there from 1967 to 1968. Mr. Spooner was stationed at Elmendorf Air Force Base from 1968 to 1973. He performed ski operations on the polar ice caps and made many trips to Fletcher's Ice Island in the Arctic Ocean in support of the Naval Research Facility there, dropping essential supplies. From 1973 to 1975, he flew C-130s out of Dyess AFB. During his 22 years as an Air Force pilot, he flew 6,800 hours and held many operation and management positions. He had lived in Anchorage since 1981. He was in the Air Force from 1949 to 1975, and was a radio station manager in Bremerton, Wash., from 1976 to 1981. He was manager of Team Electronics in Anchorage from 1981 to 1982, and worked as a corrections officer for the State of Alaska from 1983 to 1990. Mr. Spooner retired from the Air Force in 1975 having received the Air Force Commendation Medal with one oak leaf cluster, Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal with seven oak leaf clusters, American Campaign Medal, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award, Presidential Unit Citation with one oak leaf cluster, Combat Readiness Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon and Good Conduct Medal. Mr. Spooner was a member of Scenic Park Bible Church and the National Rifle Association. He helped anyone in need, his family said. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, skeet shooting and football games. He is survived by his wife, Coralea of Anchorage; his sons and daughters- in-law, John and Shari of Grand Rapids, Mich., James and Dawn of Grand Rapids, David and Sherry of Anchorage and Daniel and Nancy of Grand Rapids; his daughters and sons-in-law, Rebekah and Herbert Kirkland of Tacoma, Wash., Elisabeth and Mark Sooy of Anchorage and Ruth of Anchorage; his brothers, Robert of Fairbanks and William of Minneapolis; and his grandchildren, Amber, John, Joleana, Joe, Derek, Rachel, Sarah, Sharayah, Sandi Jo, Angela, Andrew, Bonnie, Shad Arthur and one unborn grandchild. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Grace Bible College, 1011 Aldon Ave., S.W., Wyoming, Mich., 49509.
