Son of Mildred Cross and Neri Swetnam who settled in Blaine, Lawrence County, before he was born. He left Blaine about age 21 to team and chop wood for the iron furnances in Bath County. 1m to Zarilda Preston on 23 Dec 1842 in Lawrence Co, KY. 2m to Mary Jane Williams from Scott Co, VA, 18 Jan 1848. They had at least six children. Was teaching school in Morgan Co. in 1850. In about 1850 he began the study of medicine. He studied under a doctor in Bath Co. Graduated 1860 from Ohio Medical College; practiced in Johnson Co. He returned to Louisa, Lawrence Co. and started practing medicine there. He also practiced medicine at West Liberty and Paintsville. From 1863-1864 he was an acting Assistant Surgeon with the 39th KY Vols at Louisa and Paintsville, KY. Hamilton Swetnam is also on the roster as a Surgeon in the 65th Enrolled Militia (USA). In 1872 he was an Assistant Surgeon with the 4th Infantry at Louisa, KY. He owned 308 acres of "good" land in Lawrence Co, a large tract in Johnson Co, and a number of lots in Louisa, KY. He was an elder and preacher in the Methodist Protestant Church for over forty years. He was a music instructor in his early life. He was considered a wealthy man in his day, he was very active in local affairs and businesses. He was part owner of a floor mill in Louisa and owned land in Lawrence Co. along the Livisa Fork of the Big Sandy River. He was a very tall man of reddish complexion.
