John HAMILTON was the son of Mary WHEELER (1706-1743) and John HAMILTON (1699-1746). His birth year is calculated backwards from his age at the time of his death, as recorded in the God's Acre cemetery records taken by Raymond B. Traver in 1916 and from the 10 volume listing by members of the Owasco County (NY) chapter of the D.A.R. in 1959.

Little is known of the early life of JOHN HAMILTON. Secondary records and a few public family trees found online list his only known wife as:

WILSON, Jane (1740-1799). There are records (land sales, marriages, witnesses to wills, etc.) showing interactions in Washington and Cayuga Counties, NY between the Wilson, Dixon, Hopkins, and Hamilton families before, during and after the Revolutionary War.

Their known children:

1-2) Twins - James Hamilton (1746-?) and Deacon John Hamilton (1746-1819).
3) Miriam Hamilton Dixon (1750-1823). Her husband James C. Dixon came to the Brutus area from Hebron, Washington County (NY) near 1800 to take up his bounty land warrant, due him as a soldier, on Lot #74.
4) Nancy Hamilton Whitmore (1767-1793).
5) William Hamilton (1772-1823).
6) John Hamilton (1773-1843).
7) Mary "Polly" Hamilton Douglass (1784-1852)

Note: The names Joseph, Jennet or Jennie, and Martha are sometimes associated with this couple but these may be the names of grandchildren.

Military: Aside from his headstone inscription, a payroll record from 26 June to 28 Oct 1777 for Capt. John Hamilton's Company can be found in Vol. 1, pg. 105, "Col. John William's papers", New York Library, Albany, NY.

The only censuses this John HAMILTON would have participated in before his death in 1806 are the 1790 and the 1800.. There are 6 John Hamiltons listed as heads of house on the 1790 census, most with young children. By this time he would have been about 65-66 years of age and possibly living with or near one of his children. There is a John Hamilton living next to a James Hamilton in Ulster County, NY between the communities of Windsor and Newburgh.

Also on the 1790 census is a John Hamilton living in Hebron, Washington Co, NY. This is where his daughter Miriam HAMILTON DIXON and her husband James C. DIXON were living at that time. They later moved to Cayuga County and settled near the Menz-Brutus-Weedsport area.

In 1800 a John Hamilton was living in Aurelius, Cayuga Co, NY. This census is difficult to read due to fading of the ink.
