Benjamin resided in Granville County and enlisted in Company E of the 15th NC State Troops in Franklin County at the age of 41 on May 16, 1861. He was present or accounted for until he was discharged on an unspecified date by reason of being over age. Not allowing the discharge to be the end of his service, Benjamin then formed his own company (Company C, Captain Benjamin J. Blackley's Company) in the 3rd Battalion Senior Reserves.
