Rachel Esther Altis, 96, of Cabool, Missouri, passed away November 28, 2002 at Kabul Nursing Home, Cabool.
She was born January 11, 1906 to Andrew and Maude Srader Bray in the city of Enid, Indian territory, which later became the state of Oklahoma. The family moved to Cabool in 1919. Esther met and was courted by Paul Altis of Cabool, and they were married on March 1, 1923. They were blessed with 70 years of marriage until his death in 1993. To this union four children were born. The couple owned and operated a farm north of Cabool until 1942 when they moved to Kansas City, Missouri, and then to Los Angeles, California. They returned to Missouri in 1946 and opened a restaurant in Mtn Grove, Missouri, which they sold. In 1958 they bought and operated the El Patio Hotel in Cabool until they retired in 1977 and moved to thier home in Mtn. Grove. Due to failing health they moved to Pineview Heights Senior Apartments in Cabool and then in 1996 Esther entered Kabul Nursing Home. While meeting the demands of farm life and raising a young family during the Great Depression, Paul and Esther commited their lives to Christ and helped organize and build Providence Free Will Baptist Church where they were members. While in Kansas City and Los Angeles, Esther worked for the U.S. Army Medical Records Center. During her years in Cabool she was active in civic affairs and was selected the Woman of the Year by Cabool Chamber of Commerce in 1971. She served as Cancer Closet Chairperson in 1972. Esther enjoyed bowling and was an active bowler into her 80's. She is survived by two daughters, Ada Hilderbrand of Kansas City, Missouri, and Fay Noah of Osage City, Kansas; two sons, Emmett Altis of Kansas City, Missouri, and Hubert Altis of Liberty, Missouri; six grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; five great great grandchildren; a host of nieces and nephews and many friends. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her. Funeral services were held Monday, December 2, 2002, in Elliott-Gentry Funeral Chapel with Rev. Jim Norris officiating. Burial was in Hillcrest Cemetery at Mtn. Grove under the direction of Elliott-Gentry Funeral Home of Cabool.
