Long Time Resident, Jabus W. Rawls, Dies

Funeral services for Jabus Willie Rawls, 90, were held at 2:30 p. m. Monday, Jan. 15, at First United Methodist Chruch. Burial was in Columbia Cemetery with Colonial Funeral Home in charge.
The Rev. Jack Loflin and the Rev. Norman Boone officiated.
Mr. Rawls died Saturday, Jan. 13, at Concordia Parish Hospital, Ferriday, La., where he had been a patient for two days. Prior to that time he was a patient in the Harrsonburg, La., Nursing Home for two months.
He was born in Spring Cottage Nov. 5, 1888, the son of John B. and Mattie Lewis Rawls.
He was married to Oneida Applewhite on Aug. 23, 1911 in Columbia. She preceded him in death in January 1969.
For 12 consecutive years, from 1924 to 1936, he was Chancery Court Clerk in Marion County. He worked at several different times for Lampton Company and Rankins. He also owned and operated a cattle farm in East Columbia. The farm was one of the first in the area terraced against erosion. Frequently used by the County Agent to demonstrate new methods and techniques, his farm was one of the first to introduce registered Jersey cattle. He also raised registered Hereford cattle.
He is survived by four sons, J. W., Jr., Seattle, Wash., Charles of East Columbia, Giles of Houston, Texas, and Dr. John Rawls, Ottumwa, Iowa; four daughters, Mrs. Burl Thompson, Foxworth, Mrs. Dick Thomae, Jonesville, La., Mrs. Clifford Smyly, Houston, Texas, and Mrs. Vernon Price, Channelview, Texas; three brothers, Lewis, Columbia, and Johnny and Giles of Gulfport; 21 grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren.
Mr. Rawls was a member of long standing at First United Methodist Church, Columbia, a member of the Men's Bible Class of that church and a 32nd degree Mason. Both he and Mrs. Rawls were members of the Order of Eastern Star.
Pallbearers were Tom Shows, H. L. Speights, Philip Singley, Joe Boucher, Denson Terry and Thad Lampton.
He celebrated his 90th birthday, Nov. 5, with all of his children, three brothers, and many other friends and relatives present.
