HOUSTON, MINN. - Leonard W. Hermanson, 93, passed away Wednesday, March 2, 2005, at Valley View Nursing Home in Houston. He was born Nov. 5, 1911, to Joseph and Emma (Olson) Hermanson of Spring Grove, Minn.; he was the 10th of 12 children. He was baptized and confirmed at Black Hammer Lutheran Church. He studied Catechism in Norwegian and English. He was a member of Cross of Christ Lutheran Church in Houston.
Leonard was only 8 years old when he lost his mother, two sisters and four brothers in the 1920s to the flu epidemic. He was raised by his father and older sisters. As a young man, he hired out as a farm hand and eventually came to Looney Valley, where he met Lillie Olson. They were married Feb. 22, 1935. They farmed for many years in the Houston area. Leonard also was employed by Archer Daniels in Winona and worked with building construction and custom fencing. During his lifetime, he enjoyed fishing, gardening, playing cards, music, dancing, the Minnesota Twins, "anything chocolate," a piece of lefse and spending time with friends and family.
Leonard is survived by a daughter, Judy Sennes of Hokah, Minn.; grandchildren, Shelley (Mark) Hiser of Houston, Minn., Beth (Jeff) Mollet of La Crescent, Minn., Jeff (Laurie) Sennes of Hokah, Minn., Jim (Theresa) Sennes of Rochester, Minn., Angie (Tom) Wilson of La Crescent, Minn., Ted Sennes of Hokah, Minn. He also is survived by 14 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Ellen Olson and Helen Olson of Houston, Minn.; a brother-in-law, Sidney Johnson of Galesville, Wis.; a son-in-law, Robert McCurdy of La Crescent, Minn.; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Lillie (Jan. 27, 1997); a daughter, Janet McCurdy; a son, Joey; six sisters; and five brothers.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Monday, March 7, at Cross of Christ Lutheran Church in Houston, with the Rev. Louise Stromberg officiating. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Hoff Funeral Homes, Houston Chapel, and one hour before the service at the church. Burial will be in Silver Creek Cemetery.
