Benjamin Belding's will gave part of his property at Shippan Point for a graveyard. Presumably, several member of the Belding family and their neighbours were interred in the old Belding Cemetery before it ceased to be used. Benjamin Belding's gravestone (and perhaps other grave markers), along with the associated human remains, appear to have been transferred to this cemetery after being discovered during construction work at Shippan many years later.
