A retired farmer, Mr. Mathews was a member of the Crossroads Baptist Church and a Mason.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday at 3 p.m. in Sardis Baptist Church with Rev. C. R. Weatherford and Rev. C. W. Jones officiating.
Interment, under the direction of Southern Funeral Home of Winnfield, was in the church cemetery with Masonic graveside rites.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. R. E. Mathews, Sr.; one son, R. E. Mathews, Jr., of West Monroe; two daughters, Mrs. Lillie Smith, Route 1, Winnfield, Mrs. Leonard Doremire of Dry Prong; one brother, C. H. Mathews, Laurel, Miss.; 10 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren, and two great, great grandchildren.
