Earl E. Hopkins, Sr., age 86, of Wilmington, DE, died after a short illness.
He was born in Wilmington, son of the late Earl Theodore Hopkins and Gladys Buckley (Hopkins) McEwan. Mr. Hopkins joined the Marine Corps in 1942 and served in the Southwest Pacific area from March 1943 to August 1945 and was discharged November 7, 1945. He was a 32nd Degree Mason and a member of Oriental Lodge No. 27 A.F. & A.M. He was a member of the Stapler Club in the Forty Acres where he lived most of his adult life. During his employment with Exxon Mobil, he served as Treasure of his union for a time. He retired from Exxon Mobil in February of 1986 and worked for the News Journal Co. until April of 2007.
He is survived by his children, Dorothy Nead of Roaring Spring, PA, Earl E. Hopkins, Jr. of Linwood, PA, Helen "Dutchy" Hopkins of Wilmington, Mary Piergalline of Laurel, MD, Sharon Hopkins of Newark, Eileen Cogdill of Ft. Carson, CO and Steven Hopkins of Newark; 12 grandchildren, 11 great grand-children and his faithful feline friend, " Brutus". He was preceded in death by 2 wives, Marie "Mame" Hopkins who died September 10, 1967, Erma A. Hopkins who died October 17, 2007 and a granddaughter, Jeanne Marie "Jamie" Montgomery who died May 7, 1988.
Friends and family will be received Saturday, July 18, 2009 from 9-10:30 am at the DOHERTY FUNERAL HOME, 1900 Delaware Ave., Wilmington. Interment will follow at Gracelawn Memorial Park.
