Ray J. Carroll was the son of Harley Peter Carroll and Amy Eldora Pemberton and the husband of Etta Lohman. After his first wife's death in 1966 he married second in January, 1969, to Elizabeth ___ Kepler (1885-1990). Ray spent his early years growing up in Miami County, Ohio. His father, Harley, died in an accident when Ray was 5. When Ray was 15 his family moved to Fairmont, Indiana. Three years later Ray graduated from Fairmont Academy (high school). He attended Earlham College for two years and then transferred to the University of Michigan. In 1911 he graduated with a Bachelor's in mechanical engineering degree from the University of Michigan. He worked for two years in Philadelphia as an engineer for Taylor Stroker. Then he moved to Milwaukee and for many years he was a mechanical engineer with Allis-Chalmers and other companies. He and his family lived at 6511 Washington Circle, Wauwotosa, WI. He retired before 1950. In 1950 he was living during the winters in Florida. In 1954 he moved with his wife from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to a new home in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. However, he continued to spend summers in Wisconsin. In retirement he enjoyed traveling around the U.S. and to Europe, especially Switzerland. He had incredible health and vitality until very late in life.
From death notice in Milwaukee Journal, Sept. 18, 1982, p. 5:
"Carroll, Ray J. of St. Petersburg, Fla. formerly of Wauwatosa, passed away Sept. 16, 1982, at the age of 95 years, beloved husband of Elizabeth, father of James R., Virginia Corrigan and Ruth Cihla. Further survived by seven grandchildren, great grandchildren, other relatives and friends. Visitation Monday Sept. 20 from 5 until 8 p.m under the auspices of McKinley Lodge No. 307 F. & A.M. (Freemasons). Interment Wisconsin Memorial Park. Mr. Carroll was a member of McKinley Lodge from 1937 to 1958 at which time he moved to Florida."
