Bertha Ellen Kembery, daughter of Joseph Tolbert and Julia Ann (Waters) Maeder, was born on February 12, 1920, southwest of Bridgewater in Cass County, Iowa. Bertha entered eternal rest on June 9, 2009, at Creston Nursing and Rehabilitation at the age of 89 years, 3 months, and 28 days.

Bertha attended country school in Cass County and graduated from Corning High School in 1937 with a Normal Training Certificate. She taught in a one room school house in Adair County for 2 years. On May 25, 1940, Bertha married Maurice Rollan Kembery in Winterset. One daughter was born to this union.

Bertha was a farm wife and helped in the fields. She cooked for hired help and carpenters as they put up every building on the farm. In 1990, Bertha and Maurice sold the farm and moved to Creston.

Bertha was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church. She wintered in Florida the last 4 years. She crocheted over 100 afghans and gave most of them away. She also liked to play cards.

She is survived by, her daughter, Connie Maynes of Beachwood, NJ; her brother, Vern Maeder; her sisters: Alice Lents and Mary Ann Johnson; sisters-in-law; Veronica Maeder, and Betty Maeder, and nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Maurice in 2002; 3 brothers: Bert, Jack and Earl Maeder; 1 sister, Ilene Maeder; 1 sister-in-law, Barbara Maeder; and 2 brothers-in-law: Melvin Lents and Richard Johnson.
