Our people were surprised and grieved last evening to hear of the death of Mrs. Sarah A. Proctor Eckels, widow of the late William Eckels. Mrs. Eckels had been failing in health since the death of her husband a few weeks ago, but was confined to bed only a few hours and was not considered seriously ill until about one hour previous to her death. She was aged 79 years. She is survived by three sons, John P. Eckels, of Decatur, Ill. ; Walter L. Eckels and Dr. George M. Eckels of this place. Deceased was a member of the Presbyterian church of this place since its organization, and was a charter member of the Woman's Missionary Society, which celebrated Its twenty-fifth anniversary on Wednesday evening. Mechanicsburg, March 3 - The death of Mrs. William Eckels, which occurred yesterday evening about six o'clook, following so close upon that of her husband, who departed this life several weeks ago, was a sad blow to the many friends of this aged lady. The deceased had been ailing for some time, but it was only the past ten days that her friends became alarmed, but still they were not prepared for so early a demise. The deceased was born in Carlisle, and her maiden name was Proctor. She moved with her husband to Mechanicsburg about fifty years ago, and has lived here ever since, held in the highest respect and esteem. She was a Christian woman in the strictest sense, a member of the Presbyterian Church. Up to within a few months of her death she was a regular attendant of every church service, At a ripe old ago she has passed to her reward. Three sons survive her. The funeral will be held Monday afternoon from her late residence, the hour at this writing not having been definitely decided upon. Interment will be made in the Mechanicsburg Cemetery.
