Baley Daugherty was born on March 8, 1830, in Greene County, Indiana. Although his name is often shown as "Bailey", he signed his name as "Baley" on every document.
While he was quite small the family moved to Missouri and then to Arkansas, where his father died. Sarah took Baley and his three brothers to live with other members of the Daugherty family, brothers and cousins of her late husband, north of Little Rock near the Caldron River in Arkansas.

Baley married Mary Jane Wideman in Jackson County, Arkansas, in October, 1851, and they had eight children. Baley's brother, John B. Daugherty, left the family in Jackson County, Arkansas, and made his way to Kaufman County, Texas, where he lived with his uncle, Nathaniel Daugherty, who had come to Kaufman County before Texas became a state.

About 1848, John B. invested in property for the whole family, and shortly after 1850, Sarah Daugherty (now Sarah Kizzia and widowed for a second time) and her other sons, and Baley and his wife all moved to Texas, settling at Union Hill, near Forney in Kaufman County.

With the Civil War's arrival, Baley joined the Mustang Cavalry, 13th Brigade, Texas State Troops, a local militia organization which had a number of Daugherty names on its roster. Baley's wife, Mary Jane died in January, 1868.

Baley was a wealthy rancher and businessman. He and his brother owned a ferry on the Trinity River, on the road to Dallas. He also owned some lots in downtown Dallas. He was know to carry a bag of gold coins with him, sometimes as much as two or three thousand dollars, to buy cattle. He sometimes drove his cattle in a large herd up the trail to Kansas.

Baley married Dezia (Daisy) Ann Taylor on October 20, 1870, in Kaufman, Texas, and they had three children during their marriage.

Returning home after selling some cattle, Baley was robbed and murdered (shot) on March 9, 1877, not far from his home, and his body left on the railroad tracks to be run over by the train. His body was so badly mangled it was almost impossible to identify, but it is said that one of his sons recognized a severed hand as being that of his father. Baley was 47 years and 1 day of age, and was buried beside his first wife, Mary Jane, in the Daugherty Family Cemetery near Forney.
