It had been a long life and a hard one, for Christopher McManus, A Soldier of the Revolution, and when he died at almost 91 years old, June 14, 1849, He had served his country for 6 years and 8 months, as a front line soldier, Sent 5 sons off to war, buried 2 wives, fathered , fed and some how clothed 13 children, 8 of them on a guaranteed cash income of only $ 96.00 per year for the last 30 years of his life.
Surely it was a happy hour for him when on June 4, 1825 at 67 years of age, having ridden his old horse from his pioneers dwelling near Forestville , he found himself one of 30 Revolutionary War Veterans who had gathered in Fredonia to pay honor to General Lafayette. Surely it was a happy moment for this time worn old Soldier, perhaps his happiest, when he was presented to the distinguished guest and to be remembered by his former commander by name,
" McMANUS, SERGEANT, 1st New Jersey, General Maxwell's Brigade."
