She was preceded in death by her husband of 35 years, R.T. Dowden, her parents, and brother, Joe Calhoun, of Wisner, LA.
Vernie lived in Ansley, LA in her earlier years and after moving to Shreveport, she was a dedicated nurse at Willis-Knighton North until her retirement. She attended Southside Baptist Church, but was a member of Linwood Baptist Church.
Vernie was full of life and known for her dry wit and humor. To know her was to love her. She was a lover of animals and nature.
Survivors are her sisters, Margie King of Newellton, Nellie Curington of Wisner, Joyce Dubois of Blanchard and Sue Bowden of Greenwood; brother, J.M. Calhoun of Wisner; stepson, Rodney Dowden; stepdaughters, Phyllis Dowden and Cheri Stanford of Coushatta, LA and their children and grandchildren. Numerous nephews and nieces affectionately knew Vernie as "Aunt Bunny".
Pallbearers and honorary pallbearers will be nephews, Mike, Tim and Justin Calhoun, Bo and Chris Curington, Roger Hankin, Clay Dowdy, Clint Maile, Powell Perot, Sam Boswell, Stan Bowden, Jimmy Ratliff and Tommy Turner.
Services for Vernie will be at 11:30 a.m., Thursday, July 2, 2009, at Rose-Neath Marshall Street Chapel. Officiating will be Bro. Ed Gonzales. Interment will follow in South Central Baptist Cemetery, Wisner, LA. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff at Christus Schumpert Highland for their professional and loving care.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Linwood Baptist Church.
