SYLVIA 5 WELLS (Randall4, Edward3, Thomas2-1)
b. ca 1767 [calc. g.s.};
mar. ca 1789 her first cousin Joseph 5 Wells, b. 2 Sept. 1764 to Thomas and Sarah (Clarke) Wells. The marriage is unrecorded, but proof can be found in her father's Will: "to my beloved daughter Sylvia Wells wife of Joseph...." [Hopkinton Probate Records, 5:168].
After their marriage, Sylvia and her husband moved to the Ohio territory. She was a hardy woman who twice returned to Rhode Island on horseback to visit her family, once carrying back to Ohio a mirror, the gift of her parents [Denison, p. 148]. When her father died in 1821, his Will stated, "...my Will is in case my daughter Sylvia Wells should become in a destitute situation by being left a widow or otherwise and should choose to come into these parts to live again in such case my will is that my son Thomas V. Wells pay to her fifty dollars...." [Hopkinton Probate Records, 5:168, #931571].
When her husband Joseph d. in 1 825, Sylvia, after receiving her dower share, purchased from the estate sale a bedstead, chest, six chairs, a cabinet, animals, tools, and the "loom, swifts, and quill wheel" [Wash. Co. Probate, 3:395~396}.
Sylvia was still in Adams Twp., Washington Co., OH, at the time of the U.S. census of 1840, aged 60-69. She moved with her Sons to western Ohio in the early 1840s.
Sylvia d. 11 April 1849 aged 83y, and is bur. at Willow Branch Cem. at Waynesfield, Auglaize Co., OH [g.s., Auglaize Co, Cem.].
