Elmer was the son of Joshua Elmo Coffey and Emma Breitenbach. He married Grace Ellis on 13 May 1902. They had 12 children but Elmer died before the birth of the last child. He died of novacaine poisoning in a hotel after a visit to his dentist while traveling on business. He was the Director of Safety & Sociology of the Detroit, Toledo & Ironton Railroad.

Elmer Coffey, 46, Taken by Death - D. T. & I. Official Dies Suddenly at Springfield, Funeral Here Today

Elmer Coffey, aged 46 years, died suddenly Monday at Springfield, O. Mr. Coffey who was director of safety and sociology of the Detroit, Toledo & Ironton railway, was enroute to Philadelphia, after spending the week end with his family here. Mrs. Coffey and son Jack, went to Springfield immediately and returned Tuesday with the body which was taken to the home on West Logan street. Mr. Coffey was born in Waverly, O., and was married May 13, 1902 to Miss Grace Ellis of Dundee. The family have lived here about three years. Survivors are the widow and eleven children, Mrs. Vera Bobel of Tontogany, O., Mrs. Thelma Groening of Detroit, Elmer Jr., of Cleveland, O, Mrs. Vivian Liddle of Detroit, Mrs. Winona Price of Monroe, Jack, Robert, Betty, Mariella, Charles and Lee at home, also his father, Joshua (Jerry) Coffey, of Lima, O., who is spending the winter here, two brothers, Grover and Patrict of Lima, two sisters, Mrs. Edith Hartman of Creston, O., and Mrs. Hazel Spurlock of Lima. Funeral services will be held this afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the Presbyterian church, Rev. Bertram L. Davies officiating. Burial will be made in Brookside.

The funeral of Elmer T. Coffey was held Thursday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock in the Presbyterian church. The Rev. B. D. Davies officiated and the burial was made in Brookside cemetery. The bearers were C. Difill of Detroit, Fry Dean of Toledo, H. T. Black of Springfield, Ohio, Bert Smart of Detroit, L. J. Ogle of Springfield and Homer Price of Tecumseh, all office employees of the Detroit, Toledo and Ironton railroad company. Those from away who attended the service were Mr. and Mrs. George Lidell, Jr., and Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Groening, all of Detroit, Elmer Coffey of Cleveland, Mrs. Edith Hartman of Preston, Ohio, Mrs. Arthur Houk of Barberton, Ohio, Patrick and Grover Coffey of Lima, Ohio, Mrs. Anna Gilette* of Toledo, Mrs. and Mrs. J. H. Coffey of Adrian, Floyd Daley and Miss Alice Daley of Dundee, Donald Ellis of Onsted, Seeley Wilson of Dundee, Mrs. Mabel Coffey and daughter Gladys of Holloway, Mrs. George Lidell of Detroit, Mrs. Ernest Linger of Sand Creek and F. E. Giesbueler of Toledo.
