Captain John Woods served in the Revolutionary War as a Private and then Captain serving under Brig. General George Rogers Clark in the Northwest campaigns. Later John served as an officer in the Franklin County, TN Home Guards during the War of 1812. He married Abigail Estill, daughter of Calvary Captain Wallace Estill, on 30 - Apr - 1778 . Captain John Woods was a friend and neighbor to future President Thomas Jefferson, James Madison and several other famous Early Americans. Cpt. John Woods a revolutionary officer born in wedlock of William Woods and Susanna Wallace in Va. 1751 professed the religion of Jesus Christ in 1780 removed to Kentucky in the fall of 1781 Became a member of the United Baptist Church Removed to Tennessee in 1809 and died the 16th of Oct 1815 resigning his soul to him that gave it and his mortal body to sleep in Jesus to rest untill it finds redemption by the blood of the everlasting covenant.
