DEACON MANLEY BERRY TICHENOR: This outstanding citizen and Baptist
deacon was born in Ohio County, Kentucky, on November 14, 1820, and
was the son of Jared Tichenor, a native of New Jersey who was born in
that State in 1779 and died in Ohio County, Kentucky, in 1868. His
father served as Justice of the Peace for a number of years and as
Sheriff of Ohio County for four years. Mr. Tichenor's mother was
Miss Martha Bennett, a native of Nelson County, Kentucky, who was
born in 1781 and died in 1857.
Brother Tichenor was converted at an early age and united with
Walton's Creek Church, in Ohio County, Kentucky. He later moved his
membership to Buck Creek Church in McLean County, Kentucky. From the
year 1854 to 1876 he served this Church as Clerk, and, in that time,
he was absent but three times from the monthly business meetings. In
the meantime he served the Church in the office of deacon. In 1879
he was recognized as a deacon of the South Hampton Church as he had
moved his membership there.
On March 30, 1889, Mr. Tichenor entered into the constitution
of the Yellow Creek Baptist Church and was recognized as the first
deacon of that Church. He continued to serve in that capacity until
his death, on October 2, 1908, at the advanced age of almost eighty-
eight. His body was laid to rest in the cemetery at Thruston,
Kentucky.
From the records of the Association we note that Mr. Tichenor
served as a messenger from the three Churches mentioned above. He
appears in the records for the first time, in 1856, as a messenger
from Buck Creek Church, and, his last appearance was as a messenger
from Yellow Creek Church, in the year 1903. His record as clerk,
deacon, and messenger to the Association was outstanding.
He was married to Miss Alpha Whitaker, a native of Ohio County,
on July 25, 1845. Thirteen children blessed this union and all of
them became members of Baptist Churches. One, that is known to the
author, became a deacon of Yellow Creek Church, following in the
footsteps of his father.
