Grafton Vern Hovey was born in Millville, the son of Joseph Grafton Hovey and Sarah Jessop. He attended school at Millville and at South Cache High School.

On August 18, 1928, he married Jennie Olson, who was born September 1, 1909, the daughter of Heber and Mary Eliza Nyman Olsen. As a young girl at home in Logan she worked with her dad on the farm milking the cows, hoeing and thinning the sugar beets. Jennie helped her mother with house work, cooking, and canning and learned all the trick and trades of homemaking.

Vern worked in construction and was a superintendent and foreman in the building trades. He served for one term on the Millville Town Board.

Jennie was in leadership positions in Primary and YWMIA. She served as Postmaster of Millville for twenty-two years; and for twenty-five years, she donated her time as a 4-H leader. She was active member of the Lusannah G. Hovey Camp, Daughters of Utah Pioneers. She enjoyed quilting and sewing.

Grafton and Jennie were the parents of: Jennie VaLoyce, Janiel, Arlan and Clinton.
