Sam Wells and Hattie Lee Crane Montgomery, devoted parents and family members, passed away peacefully in San Antonio, Texas on July 7, 2009. Sam Wells and Hattie Lee were united in marriage on Christmas Day 1938, and have been happily married for 70 years. Hattie Lee was born on June 12, 1918 and attended school in Dallas. Sam Wells was born on March 23, 1917 in Emhouse Texas and also attended school in Dallas. They were high school sweethearts. Hattie Lee and Sam Wells moved to Austin in 1938 where they became members of First Baptist Church. Sam Wells became a Deacon, and Hattie Lee was a Sunday School Teacher and a member of the choir and Women's Missionary Group. They were members of the church for more than 65 years. Sam Wells retired as an administrator after 43 years from the Texas Employment Commission now called Texas Workforce Commission. He was an advisor to various public officials including Governor Connelly. He was also an officer of the Sons of the Revolution. Hattie Lee worked as a secretary for more than 30 years with the I.R.S. before her retirement. The couple loved to travel especially to Colorado, Canada, Wyoming, New Mexico, Arizona and many other places where they spent time taking pictures, fishing and enjoying nature. Sam Wells would paint landscapes from the pictures he took on their trips. He also enjoyed gardening and sharing stories of his childhood on the farm. Hattie Lee enjoyed sewing, cooking and spending time with her family. Sam Wells and Hattie Lee are survived by their only son, Thomas W. Montgomery, his wife, Delina; five granddaughters, Laurel, Nicole, Paige, Heather, and Hattie; eleven great-grandchildren; Delina's children, Isabella, Christian and Dominic; Sam's sister Margaret Kulik, her husband, Steve and their children Steven and Ann; Sam Wells' sister-in-law, Theresa Montgomery and her family; Sam Wells' niece, Angelique; Hattie Lee's niece, Phyllis Ann Wedgeworth and nephew, David Crane. They are preceded in death by their parents, brothers and other family members. A visitation will be held from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m., at Cook-Walden Funeral Home on Thursday, July 9, 2009. A Funeral Service will be held at 1:00 p.m., at the funeral home, on Friday, July 10, 2009. Interment to follow at Austin Memorial Park.
