James' parents moved to Green Co. Wisconsin shortly after his birth. There he married Florence Cotherman in 1874. He attended the University of Wisconsin and taught school in Green Co. until coming to Faribault Co. in 1881. He farmed south of Winnebago for a number of years and was a grain buyer at Omaha depot. After moving to town he was twice elected mayor and was serving in that capacity at the time of his death.
