Maude was born in Lake Hendricks Township, Brookings County, Dakota Territory, 12 years before it became the state of South Dakota. Her parents had "gone west" from Sparta, Wisconsin, just a year or so before, and were establishing a homestead on the prairie. But her father wasn't a farmer at heart and they soon moved to the town of Brookings. There she graduated from high school, and promptly began teaching.

In 1900, she married Frank Edson Boyden, a student at South Dakota Agricultural College, who went on to get a medical degree, do a residency at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, and then return to establish a practice in Brookings. During this time, Maude taught music on and off while raising two sons:

Horace Mayo
Allen Marston

About 1910, Maude and Frank moved to Portland, where he set up practice and she taught music. They traveled to Europe to inspect clinics there, and in 1938 stayed eight full months.

Their oldest son, Allen, joined his father in practice in the late '30s, but Frank was forced to retire in 1945. They continued to travel, but only to winter in Mexico. He died in 1957, and Maude followed two years later.
