John Harwell
John William "Joe" Harwell passed away Wednesday morning, Oct. 5, 2005, in a local nursing home. He was 79.
Joe was a native of Westover, Ala., the son of the late William Harwell and Eva Swiney Harwell. He also was preceded in death by his son, Keith DeVon Harwell.
He was a veteran of the Korean conflict, having served with the Army, and later retired from Plantation Pipeline Co. with 39 years of service. He was a member of Spring Creek Church of God.
He was a person in whom God's spirit dwelt and he was a diligent prayer warrior. He was active in prison ministries in both Montgomery, Ala., and the Chattanooga area. He was loved and respected by the staff of NHC McFarland Avenue, and each year for the four years he was there he was voted Mr. Valentine by the staff.
He is survived by his wife of 46 years, June Taylor Harwell; sisters, Dean Eddings, Sue Boone and Patsy Norris, all of Birmingham, Ala.; also several nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be today at 1 p.m. in the East Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home with Pastor Bennie Mills and Dr. Edward L. Williams officiating.
Interment will follow in Chattanooga National Cemetery.
The family will receive friends today from noon until the service at the funeral home.
Arrangements are by East Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, Crematory & Florist, 404 S. Moore Road, Chattanooga, TN 37412.
