Andrew Medley, 84, Dies After Illness

Andrew J. Medley, 84, 1306 Division street, died yesterday in his home after a weeks' illness. He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. James Speary, Wilkes-Barre, and Miss Sue Medley; three sons, James, Nanticoke; Harvey J. and Roscoe, this city.
The funeral will be held Wednesday afternoon in the home of Mrs. Speary, 117 Carlisle street, Wilkes-Barre. Interment will be in Shawnee cemetery.

Andrew J. Medley fought in the Civil War, in 4th reg't. Tennesee Mounted Infantry, Co. I. His military pension record says that he was age 18, his height was 5 ft. 5 in., with fair complexion, grey eyes and brown hair at the time of has enrollment on Feb. 18, 1865. He was mustered out on Aug. 25, 1865 in Nashville, Tennesee. His birth place is given as three different locations in the pension records. When he enlisted he apparently gave Warren, Tenn. as his birth place as that is the date given on Form No. 119-1-A.G.O. sent by The Adjutant General's Office to the Commissioner of Pensions on May 4, 1923. On a form filled out on May 25, 1923 Andrew lists his birth place as MacMinville, Tennesee. On a Declaration For Pension filed on Nov. 17, 1930 someone listed his birth place as Nashville, Tenn., on this record his daughter Sue Medley signed as a witness to her father's signature and the handwriting on the remainder of the form looks like it could be her's. The form dated May 25, 1923 he says that he enlisted on Feb. 20, 1865 in Woodbury, Tenn., and that he resided in Avondale, Pa. in the later part of 1865 and from Jan. 1900 to the date of filing the in Scranton, Pa.
