SMALLEST IN THE CLAN

by Colleen Elayne Parent Crawford (Virginia Ann's sister)

The second born was Virginia Ann;
She was the smallest in the Parent Clan.
She had big blue eyes and lots of black hair,
And her facial features were dainty and fair.

Big brother described her as "crafty and quick."
She would tweak him then run lickety-split,
To the kitchen nook between fridge and wall
Only she could fit into a space so small!!

She and Marilyn were the same in height,
So Mother sometimes would dress them alike.
They had two dresses with ruffles and bows,
Virginia's was blue and Marilyn had the rose.

My earliest memories about Virginia
Occur after the family move to California.
Before age five I was often in her care
As Mother had to work and could not be there.

She began to work at whatever she could find,
Even when conditions were poor, she didn't mind.
I can't remember much of her work history,
Just "Casa de manana" and "Trees of Mystery."

When I was five I was very proud to be
The Flower Girl in her wedding to Jimmie.
They seemed happy and knew how to have fun,
And soon they were blessed with a tiny son!

Jimmie Junior was the joy of her life,
She worked hard to be a good mother and wife.
We still saw them from time to time,
Of what was to come there was no sign.

DeWayne was her favorite in the family,
He soon became fast friends with Jimmie.
They had many adventures and fun,
But were always there when work was to be done.

Virginia was expecting another babe to be born,
Then it happened on one Sabbath morn!!
At age twenty-seven she was carried away.
And the babe went with her sorry to say!

True that loss happened a long time ago,
Time may heal wounds but not lessen the blow!
Now she is joined by her husband and some family,
The rest she is anxiously awaiting to see!!!
