OBITUARY

THE CHARITON PATRIOT

Thursday, June 16, 1904

MRS. ELIZABETH JAMES

Died - Saturday, June 11, 1904, at her home near Oakley, after a lingering illness, Mrs. Elizabeth James, aged 70 years, 3 months and 3 days. Funeral services, conducted by Elder M. E. Young, of Mt. Zion church, were held Sunday at 11 o'clock and the remains interred in the Mt. Zion cemetery.

Miss Elizabeth Welch was born in Brown county, Indiana March 7th, 1834. While yet a small child she moved with her parents to McDonough county, Ill., where she grew to womanhood, and on Feb. 18, 1855, she was married to W. J. James. In 1856 they moved to Lucas county where they have since resided.

Seven children blessed this union, two of whom died in childhood. The surviving five are A. M. and Miss Floretta James of Oakley, O. H. and E. C. of this city and Mrs. C. H. Stierwalt of Murray. Her aged companion and sixteen grandchildren are also left to mourn the loss of this good woman.

Mrs. James had been a faithful and consistent member of the Baptist church since 1868. She was a faithful and loving wife and mother and a true friend. Her death has cast a gloom over the entire community, and all sympathize deeply with the bereaved relatives.

Those from a distance who attended the funeral of Mrs. James were Mr. and Mrs. James Welch, Mr. and Mrs. W. S. Kelley, Mrs. L. N. Edson, Mr. and Mrs. Dick Rodgers, Chariton, Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Welch, Ottumwa, William Rodgers, Mrs. Nora Runyan, Stanberry, Mo., Mr. and Mrs. John Cochran, Columbia, Iowa.
