Mrs Alec B. Craig (Mary H. Brown) of Chester who grew up right across the street from Mrs. Gaston, told me a couple of anecdotes about her; sometime around 1910 or 1911, my grandmother, who also went to church at Purity Presbyterian, was called over to Mrs. Gaston's carriage after church. Mrs. Gaston leaned over and told my grandmother, who was a very sensitive, shy 13 year-old "Mary, don't you ever wear green again. It makes your eyes look just like a cat" my blue-grey eyed grandmother never forgave Mrs. Gaston, but told that story quite often! — but now that I think about it, I don't think she ever did wear green! The other thing I remember hearing about old Mrs. Gaston, is that when anyone asked how she was doing, she would reply with "well, I don't feel like running a race!" My grandmother also quoted that very very often, as she herself got older.(—remembrance of Fred Powell-Haig, 2023)
