Son of Endre Johannesson Barstad and Maria Iversdaughter Gaudland
Endre Endreson was born in the year 1814. Nothing is known of his early
years except that he became a professional merchant mariner. It was said
that he brought home from Holland the first "fyrstikke" (matches) ever seen
in that neighborhood.
Endre was in poor health for some time before passing away in March of
1885 at his home in Lucas township. He is buried in an unmarked grave in the West Cemetery, Yellow
Medicine Lutheran Church, Hanley Falls. A fire destroyed the church and
presumably the oak markers often used. However, the obituary may be seen
in the Yellow Medicine Church record book, Volume I, page 283.
Endre Endreson Barstad and his family were known throughout the
pioneer period by the name Barstad. A brother of Endre's, Iver Endreson,
had a son named Gabriel who anglicised the name Endreson to Anderson
because, his daughter said, he was extremely eager to be a full-fledged
American. Since Iver was the elder brother, and Gabriel older than his
cousins (and already an outstanding personality) it was not surprising that
Endre's sons adopted the name upon coming into a new environment. In any
case, the name Endre Endreson appears in the Lyon County records, but his
sons are listed only as Anderson.

Born on the farm Barstad,
in 1814 written Barrestad.
