Her father died when she and her two siblings were little. Birdie took her children to her parent's home to be cared for while she found work. When she returned she learned that her father had taken her children to the orphanage. Birdie was able to retrieve Mary and Charles, but Betty had already been adopted by John M. & Thursa “Vida” (Bartley) Moore of Pike County, Kentucky. The children were later reunited with each other although Betty continued to live with her adoptive parents.
