Martin Ball was born in New York the son of Aaron Jerome Ball and Lucretia Blodgett. He
found his way to Wisconsin where he married Sarah Jane Dewitt. By 1860 they had followed
the Oregon trail out to northern California and settled in the Shingletown area.

Martin was the great-grandson of Lebbeus Ball, a major in the Revolutionary War.

Martin and Sarah had three sons Charles, Jay and Edward and one daughter Evaline.
