When Gaines was almost 11 years old his father, age 45, died. His mother married John Myers. In the 1900 census his mother Delphina, siblings Charlotte "Lottie", Richard C, and Capitola with his step father John. 16yr old Gaines lived 5 houses away listed as a 'hired hand' employed as 'day labor' living in the household of the hotel keeper, 73yr old Edmond Barnum, his 55yr old wife Alzina, their 2 sons ( a 32yr old farm laborer, and 24yr old blacksmith) and 16yr old daughter; their 19yr old nephew who was a cobbler and an 18yr old servant girl.
From 1910 through 1952 all census' report Gaines in Humboldt County, California. He worked in Briceland as 'common laborer in bark woods', hired for bridge work in Van Duzen, in Pacific a 'woodsman' , and a 'ranch hand' in Fortuna. He was always living as a boarder. In 1941 Bridgeville City directory Gaines and his brother are both listed; Gaines as a woodsman and Richard a laborer.
Gaines registered for the draft in Kneeland, Humboldt County, CA. His draft card states he is 58yr old. No phone. Contact person who would always know where he is was Henry Cox. And that he was born in San Luis Obispo. He lives and works in Kneeland and his employer is Anna Russ Harville of San Francisco.
There is no record of him being married. Nor is there record of him having children.
