Joseph Mort Died This Morning

A Wellknown Citizen former Postmaster at Hays Passes Away

BORN IN ENGLAND

Joseph Mort, aged 65 years, one of the best known citizens of Homestead, died this morning at 7 o'clock at the family residence, 235 East Fifth avenue, after a long illness. While he had been indisposed for a long time he was able to be about the house yesterday but took a relapse this morning which resulted in death.

He was born in Little Lever, England, and came to the United States with his parents when he was five years old. They located at Paterson and in 1872 located at Rich Rock, now the village of Camden, opposite McKeesport. There he conducted a general store and married Miss Mary Brown of that place.

In 1877 the family moved to Hays where he opened a general store and at the election of President Cleveland he was appointed postmaster of that place, a position which he held under President Harrison who succeeded Cleveland after his first term.

In 1889 he located in Homestead and opened a shoe store and until 1892 had the leading shoe store in town. On his retirement from the merchantile business in that year he and Justice J. B. Jones formed a partnership in the real estate and insurance business with offices on Dickson street which continued until his death. He was assessor for the First and Second wards for the past ten years.

He was a member of the Episcopal church, the Tu-?-pers and an honorary member of General Charles Griffin post G.A.R. He is survived by his widow, four sons, Robert J., William E., Earl and Clifford and three daughters, Mrs. H. A. Walker, Mrs. W. T. De Walt and Mrs F. W. Evans, all of whom reside here. The funeral arrangements have not yet been made.
