Gerald J. McElfresh, 82, Freetown, died at 2 a.m. Saturday, July 4, 2009, at Schneck Medical Center in Seymour.

He was retired from the U.S. Air Force and from civil service. He was a member of Disabled American Veterans.

Born April 11, 1927, in Brownstown, he was the son of George and Miram Allman McElfresh, both of whom preceded him in death.

On March 30, 1953, in Viroquea, Wis., he married Wilma L. Paul, who survives.

Other survivors include one son, Joe (Barb) McElfresh, Freetown; one daughter, Wynette (Randell) Abel, Seymour; seven grandchildren, Jerry Garrett Jr., Corlean Shirley, Crystal McElfresh, Mitchell Gullion, April Abel, Shayna Abel and Maletta Rosa.

He was preceded in death by five brothers; one sister; one stepson; and one grandson.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Spurgeon Funeral Home Inc. in Brownstown with Jean Pogue officiating.

Interment will be at Smallwood Cemetery in Brownstown. Full military graveside services will be conducted by American Legion Post 89, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1925, DAV 47 and Korean-Vietnam Veterans 7, all of Seymour.

Friends may call from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday and from 9 a.m. until time of service Tuesday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the Don and Dana Myers Cancer Center in Seymour.

The funeral will be conducted at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Spurgeon Funeral Home in Brownstown with Jean Pogue officiating. Calling will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday and 9 a.m. to service time Tuesday. Burial will be at Smallwood Cemetery in Brownstown.

Memorials may be made to Don & Dana Meyers Cancer Center.

Survivors include his wife, Wilma L. Paul McElfresh; a son, Joe (Barb) McElfresh of Freetown; a daughter, Wynette (Randell) Abel of Seymour; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
