Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon, May 14, at 2 o'clock at the Church of the Brethren in Tobacco township for Mrs. Julia F. Knox, who died yesterday at the age of 91. She was the oldest resident of Gladwin county. Burial will be at Dale cemetery. Mrs. Knox died Tuesday morning, May 12, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. John Rich, in Tobacco township, where she had gone the day before to spend some time with Mrs. Rich.
Daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Harris she was born in Macomb county July 27, 1845. She came with her family to Edenville in 1866. Here she married James G. Dow in 1870 at the old Axford Inn. Charles Axford, the proprietor, officiated at the ceremony as justice of the peace. They located on land in what is now Tobacco township, and which has since been her home.
At that time and for several years after there were no inhabitants between Edenville and the Dow farm and for some distance north. Gladwin was a part of Midland county. Billings township was organized in 1875 and comprised the territory now included in Bentley, Billings and Tobacco townships. Mr. Dow served his townships as supervisor until his death May 21, 1881.
She married John M. Knox February 28, 1885, and they had since made their home on the old homestead. Mr. Knox was a surveyor and prominent in public affairs of the county. He died April 15, 1935. As one of the oldest residents of the county Mrs. Knox could recount many interesting and lively events of Edenville when it was a stopping place for lumbermen.
She is survived by two sons and one daughter, James Jay Dow of Toledo, Ohio, Mrs. John Rich, of Tobacco township, and Vallie V. Knox, of Beaverton; two adopted daughters, Mrs. Ed Ray of Gladwin, and Mrs. Chester Buck, of Stanton; a sister and a brother, Mrs. G. W. Boman and Clarence Harris of Edenville.
