John Milton was born into a farming family in Canada. His parents were William Valentine and Samantha (Gilbert) Collver. John sometimes preferred to be called Milton and sometimes he was listed as J. Milton. His siblings were

Edna C. born 1859, died 1894 who married James Churchill Jr.

Ida M. born 1862, died 1948 who married Wellington Jeffers Miller.

Florence born 1865, died 1898 who married Arthur Mitchell.

Mary A. born 1871, died 1934 who married Harry Packins.

Elizabeth "Lizzie" born 1875 died 1956 married Louis Soule Gerow (sometimes Gerrow).

Three other children were listed in one census without last names. They were Edith born 1877, Edmund born 1878, and Ethel born 1887. All children were born in Canada.

John first married Mary Durham Caldwell Dec 22, 1886 in Dover Norfolk Ontario Canada. They had two sons - Clark Ashton born 1889, died 1951 who married Mary (Crawford) Buchanen and Daniel William born 1893, died 1955 who married Gertrude Alice Anderson.

Mary died in 1897 and John then married Maggie Dennis May 18, 1889 in Melita Arenac Michigan. They had four children - Laurel Dennis born 1900 died 1901, Leslie Edwin born 1901 died 1987 who married Martha Arabella O'Blenis, Carl Burton. born 1905 died 1975 who married Hester Marie Mathias, and Doris Ida born 1907 died 1968. Leslie and Carl both became ministers and Doris Ida became a Sister.

Maggie died 1908 and John married Alice Woodward Anderson Jun 27 1910 in Standish Arenac Michigan. She died in 1929, and in 1943 John married Mary Alma Mattice. She died later that year.

John was a farmer his entire life. In 1930 he had retired from his own farm and was living and working on son Clark's farm.

John lived 12 more years after his last wife died, dying at 94 years old.
