ANNA, Ill. -- Mrs. Lena Mildred Schaefer, age 101, of Anna passed away at 4:10 p.m. Thursday, July 2, 2009, at home.

Lena was born Dec. 22, 1907, in Wolf Lake, Ill., daughter of Albert Eugene and Fannie Sides Markert. She and Raymond Schaefer were married July 19, 1924. He preceded her in death in 1993.

They resided in Wolf Lake until 1976, when they moved to a farm in the Saratoga Community in Illinois and in 1976 they moved to Wilson Street in Anna. They were members of the St. Mary's Catholic Church in Anna, and Lena was a member of the Church Altar Society.

She is survived by a daughter, Ellen Elizabeth (Odean) Sergeant of Lebo, Kan.; three sons, Eugene Charles (Barbara) Schaefer of Anna, Carol Adam (Aileen) Schaefer of Cape Girardeau and Jimmie Wayne (Wilma) Schaefer of Jonesboro, Ill.; a daughter-in-law, Gloria Schaefer of Anna; a sister, Maud Matlock of Dunedin, Fla.; 15 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild due to be born in the fall of 2009; and many other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond (1993); an infant daughter; a son, Cyril Raymond Schaefer (2002); three sisters, Helen Constance Markert (1907), Dorothy Beatrice Markert (1931) and Virginia Othea Markert (1982); four brothers, Clyde Douglas (2000), Earl Hull (1986), Marion Cecil (2007) and James Robert (1969); one grandson; and one granddaughter.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Rendleman and Hileman Funeral Home in Anna. Rosary service will be at 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

Funeral services for Mrs. Lena Mildred Schaefer will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Anna, with Monsignor Dennis Schaefer officiating. Interment will be in Jonesboro Cemetery.
