The son of David & Catherine Erisman, in 1860 he was a laborer living with his family in Lancaster, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Both the 1850 and 1860 censuses list him with a ca. 1844 birth year.

A Civil War veteran, he served two terms of service:

  1. Enlisted at the stated age of nineteen in Lancaster July 26, 1862, and mustered into federal service there August 11 as a private with Co. K, 122nd Pennsylvania Infantry. He is listed as absent sick in Washington DC as of December 16, 1862, then granted a forty-five day leave from January 12, 1863, returning to duty April 6, 1863. He honorably discharged with his company May 15, 1863.
  2. Enlisted at the stated age of twenty-one in Lancaster August 6, 1864, mustered into federal service that day as a private with Co. H, 20th Pennsylvania Cavalry (181st Pennsylvania), and honorably discharged by general order to date June 17, 1865, at Clouds Mills, Virginia.

He married Margaret LNU., but no children were found. He moved to Nebraska at an unknown date where he took a position as a guard at the penitentiary in Lincoln, Lancaster County, there joining the G.A.R., most likely Farragut Post No. 25, although that is not verified. He died at his home there allegedly from consumption at the age of "about 47 years" despite the fact that the 1880 census lists him as a thirty-nine-year-old. On July 8, 1887, his family ordered a federal issue tombstone for his grave and received it.
