Howard was the fourth child of Ignatius Mitchell Keithler and Jennie Lee Dragoo. He lost his father at age 14. As a young man during World War I, he served in the United States Navy.

Howard married Adina Irene Clark on 5 September 1919 in Hysham, Treasure, Montana. They had three children in Montana before eventually moving to the Sheridan, Wyoming area. During World War II they moved to Washington state to work in the shipyards and spent the remainder of their lives in the Northwest.

Howard and Adina had three grandchildren, who called him "Poppy."

Howard was preceded in death by sons John and Haudy and granddaughter Sharon Ann Keithler.

Keithler, Howard M. - Age 76 years, Nov. 15, 1968 in Vancouver, Wash. Born Oct. 5, 1892, in Musselshell, Mont. Lived at 318 SE 102nd Ave. Was a resident of Vancouver the past 26 years and a retired farmer. Widow, Adina Keithler. Daughter, Mrs. William (Gertrude) Smith, of Walla Walla, Wash. There are 2 grandsons. Brother, Oswin Keithler, Grants Pass, Ore. Sisters, Mrs. Gertrude Tennant, Kelso, Wash. and Mrs. H. A. Smith, Grants Pass, Ore. Member of the Ridgefield American Legion Post and the Sara Grange in Ridgefield. Also a veteran of WW I. Funeral services 11:00 a.m., Wed., Nov. 20, at the Vancouver Funeral Chapel, with Rev. Howard Stephens officiating. Vault interment at Willamette National Cemetery, Portland, Ore. The Vancouver Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
