   No children were born to Mattie and Samuel Pierce. However, in March 1908 Mattie's two nieces, Mary McCracken age 12, and Annie McCracken age 11 came to live in the Pierce home. They made their home there until 1915 when they both graduated high school.

   Mrs. Mattie Pierce died at 7:40 a. m., Tuesday, Aug. 4, at her home in Union. Death was due to carcinoma of the lungs. She had been in failing health all summer, but had been able to be up until Thursday night when her condition became serious.

   Mattie Luella Hunt, daughter of John and Mary unt, was born Oct. 9, 1871 in Wright county, Minnesota, and came to Iowa in 1881 in a covered wagon with her parents, who located one and one-half miles south of Bangor.

   Her marriage to Samuel L. Pierce took place Sept. 7, 1892. They lived on a farm six miles west of Union in the Chester neighborhood until they moved to Union in 1924. Mr. Pierce died the following year.

   Mrs. Pierce is survived by two nieces, Mrs. Mary Glenn and Mrs. A. White, of Union, who made their home with the Pierces since infancy, two brothers, William and I. Hunt, of Union, two sisters, Mrs. Lettie Early, of Danbury, Iowa, and Mrs. Carrie Marshall, of Union. Many other relatives and a host of friends.

   She affiliated with the Federated church but for many years has retained her membership in the Chester Friends church.
