Mathilda Ann Bennett Hodges was the daughter of William Bennett and Althea White. She was called "Miss Tillie" and had eight children. The Hodges family was Methodist and was visited by circuit riders. Her daughter, Matilda Ann Hodges "Miss Mittie" remembered her mother would see the circuit riders coming up the drive and would have the chickens killed and plucked before they got to the door.

Her father William Bennett's property was divided between his daughters and their heirs and included land in Montgomery County and Frederick County, MD, on Sugar Loaf Mountain.
