Verne Ivor Mounts 1888-1918
Verne was the son of loving parents Henry Newton & Elizabeth Grace Barnhart Mounts. As a member of a well known & respected, politically active Prospect family. Verne was the oldest of four brothers and had a particular talent for baseball dating back to his grandfather, Amos Mounts. Patriotic & courageous, Verne enlisted in the Army on Dec 13 1917. He joined knowing the "Doughboy" under the command of General John J "Black Jack" Pershing, were fighting in the hellish trenches alongside the British in the French. Verne under went basic training at Kelly Field in Texas. He then finished training as an aircraft mechanic after transferring to Camp Green, North Carolina. He left for France on Jul 15 1918. Verne participated in the Aisore offensive on Jun of 1918 at Chateau-Thierry Belleau Wood, the Battle of Saint.- Mihiel in Sep and part Meuse-Argonne offensive from Sep 26 through the armistice on Nov 11 1918. Unfortunately, Verne I Mounts never saw the end of World War I. He died Oct 6 1918 in a hospital in Issoudum, France of a worldwide pandemic of influenza that took the lives of 25,000 American Soldiers and millions of civilians
