CHARLES SEPTIMUS LONGCOPE, son of Sarah McBride and Samuel Longcope, born August 1, 1807, in Philadelphia, Pa., died October 21, 1880, Houston, Texas. He was owner and Captain of the Wanderer and the Shakespeare, and along with T.W. House and others founded the Southern Steamship Company to give direct service from Philadelphia to Houston. He emigrated to the Republic of Texas in September 1838, and in November, 1839, he applied for a land grant of 320 acres. He married Virginia Sicily McAshan, daughter of Elizabeth Agee and Nehemiah McAshan in Fayette County on 5 August 1846. They had 2 children who both died in infancy. After Virginia's death on 25 May 1852, C.S. Longcope married her sister, Courtney Wellington McAshan on 20 June 1853 in Fayette County. He and Courtney had 4 children - Sara Elizabeth, Edmund McLeod, Mary Catherine and Courtney Virginia. During his life, Capt. Longcope served as Superior Judge of Fayette County, Trustee of Ruthersville College (now Georgetown University), first President of the Houston Cotton Exchange, director of the Houston and Texas Central RR, secretary of Planters Insurance Company, vice-President of Houston Exchange Bank, director of the Houston Deep Sea Navigation Company, and owner of the Hutchins House. He was also a member of the Santa Fe Expedition and served in the Texas-Mexico War.
