Melvina Gibson, 97, of Dubuque, formerly of Waterloo, Iowa, died Tuesday, June 30, 2009, at The Finley Hospital, Dubuque.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday, July 3, at Locke Funeral Home, Waterloo, where friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. today. Burial will be in Garden of Memories Cemetery, Waterloo.
She was born on Aug. 9, 1911, in West Union, Iowa, daughter of William and Christina Thorson Hoover. She married C. Laverne Gibson on April 26, 1937, in LaSalle, Ill.; he preceded her in death on March 10, 1984.
She graduated from Elgin High School in 1929 and registered nurses training in 1932, at Presbyterian Hospital in Waterloo.
Melvina was an RN in private duty nursing and then at Schoitz Memorial Hospital for many years. She and her husband owned and operated Gibson Specialty for 15 years.
She was a member of Cedar Valley Community Church, a Sunday School teacher for 22 years, a Girl Scout troop leader and organized the Girl Scout program at Emerson and Roosevelt Elementary Schools. Melvina enjoyed being around children.
Surviving are daughters, Barbara (Gary) Scoggin, of Dubuque; Carol (Larry) Spencer, of Buckingham, Iowa; a son, Richard (Marjorie) Gibson, of Fishers, Ind.; 11 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; two half brothers, Bill Hoover and George Hoover; and nieces and nephew.
She also was preceded in death by a brother, Jacob Hoover; six sisters, Clara Hoover, Barbara Winter, Margaret Mays, Virginia Sorenson, Fern Adolphson and Irene Nesteby; two half brothers, John Overhus and Bert Overhus; and a half sister, Ella Reed.
