Lois was the oldest of five surviving sisters, and one brother, all children of Mattie Mae Duggan Kirby and Thomas Alexander Kirby. At age 20, she married grocery store owner Thomas Wyche Stillwell. The couple had one child, William Kirby Stilwell (1931 - 2010). Lois was widowed at age 37 when her husband died suddenly. At the age of forty, Lois passed away due to a heart attack which was brought on through a heart valve condition.
