Laura Tuttle Settle passed away quietly at Silver Crest Manor in Anadarko, on June 2, 2009.

Laura was born on February 23, 1910 in Creek County near Mounds, to Thomas and Shretta (Scott) Tuttle. She was married to James Marshall Settle on March 27, 1926, until his passing in 1967. Laura and her family traveled across the Southwest United States working as migrant farm workers and share croppers during their early years of marriage. They purchased their first farm in 1945 near Fort Cobb, where they raised peanuts and other crops. The family farm was claimed by the construction of Fort Cobb Lake, and the family moved to Reed for a few years.

In 1961, the family purchased a farm near Anadarko where Laura lived independently for many years. Blessed with tireless ambition and an enormous heart, Laura lovingly tended the family farm. All of her able years were spent raising crops and hosting countless family gatherings. As well as being an extraordinary cook and gardener, Laura was a talented seamstress. She worked at Settle Studio and Bridal Loft for many years. An avid reader, Laura studied the Bible and related works with diligence. She also loved poetry, art, and music.

She particularly loved folk songs, early western classics, and loved singing hymns. Her unfaltering faith in God, her untiring work ethic, and loving actions were a great example for her family. Laura was a member of the Christian Science Church in Chickasha. She will be greatly missed.

She was preceded in death by her parents, five brothers, three sisters, husband, oldest son, Marshall Settle, and Son-in-law, Ned Gilliand. She is survived by a daughter, Doreen Gilliand of Boyd, Texas, son, Manly Settle and wife Mary of Anadarko, son, Ricky Settle and wife Lola of Anadarko, a daughter-in-law, Frances Settle of Lyons, Kansas, 10 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren and 15 great-great grandchildren.

No funeral services will be held. A memorial service will be announced at a later date.
