Abraham drowned Sunday afternoon in the Sun River, five miles northwest of Augusta. His widow related the tragic story of Douglas B. Abraham, their 18-year-old son, attempting to save his father and nearly drowning himself in the attempt.
The two were fishing in the Sun River when Abraham slipped from a rock into the water with his boots on. The son, relatives said, took off his boots and went to the aid of his father. The son was able to hold his father up for a time, as the older Abraham was clinging to a rock. When his boots filled, the father let go, and after a struggle in the water, the mother said, Douglas lost his grasp on his father.
A Great Falls man, Ross Sutherland, who reportedly had gotten a fishing pole and it extended it to the youth, who grasped the end of the pole and was pulled to safety.
