Pioneer Farmer Dies Near Plymouth Rock
Terrence McCabe, living twelve miles northeast of Cresco, died at his home Saturday, afternoon, Feb. 27, 1937, at the advanced age of 94 ½ years. Funeral services were held Monday morning at the Plymouth Rock church and burial was in the adjoining cemetery. Among out of town relatives and friends attending the funeral from a distance were Mr. McCabe's grandson, Mr. Hayes, and Steve McCauley, both of Charles City. The latter is an old friend of the family. They spent some time in Cresco before returning home Monday evening.
Deceased was born at Woodstock, Ill., Sept. 2, 1842. He came to Winneshiek county, Iowa, when a boy and attended school in a log school house near his home in the Coldwater neighborhood. Here he met Mary Ryan with whom he was united in marriage on Christmas day, 1865. Mr. and Mrs. McCabe celebrated their seventieth wedding anniversary in 1935.
Mr. McCabe was one of the thrifty farmers in Winneshiek county. He and his wife began housekeeping on the 700 acre farm near Plymouth Rock where they began their life's work, tilling the soil with six yoke of oxen which Mr. McCabe broke for that purpose. Later he raised horses and cattle and became one of the wealthy land owners of the community. They lived on the same farm nearly all of their married life and were among the early pioneer settlers.
Mr. and Mrs. McCabe's family numbered eight boys and eight girls. Eleven of the children, with their mother, who is nearly 90 years old survive. Besides these there are 80 grandchildren and 106 great grandchildren.
